Pacing is how fast or slow things are moving. It's very important in a story because if the reader goes too quickly through an important part, they miss things or they may feel cheated out of the emotional impact of the scene. On the other hand, if things are too slow, it starts to get boring. You have to vary fast and slow bits to keep the reader interested.

One narrative technique to increase the pace of a story is to use shorter sentences and paragraphs. This creates a sense of urgency and helps keep the reader engaged by moving the story along quickly. Additionally, incorporating action-packed scenes and dialogue can also help to heighten the pace of the narrative.

Pace is affected by the way you write. Long, complicated sentences slow the pace of your writing down, while short sentences speed it up. Try reading the piece out loud and you'll see exactly what I mean.
