Touch of Grey. Prior to it's release the Grateful Dead were playing concert venues at College Campus Theatres so small that graduations couldn't be held at the venue. Contrary to Grateful Dead Merchandising, In the 1960's they were a bad band opening for Janis Joplin. Technically, the Grateful Dead are a TWO hit wonder band. A "hit" is considered any song that reaches the top 40 in Billboard, and Truckin' hit #37 in 1970.
The Dead never had a No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, although their 1987 hit "Touch of Grey" landed in the top 10. The song did reach No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, which measures the most-played songs on mainstream rock radio stations.
