During the latter part of the first century CE, Nazareth was a small town in Galilee. Some scholars question whether there was a town there at all during the period attributed to Jesus, but the majority consensus is that there was likely a small village, although probably too small to have its own synagogue.
Luke's Gospel says that Nazareth was the home town of Mary and Joseph, and that they left the town to go to Bethlehem for a census, returning shortly after the birth of Jesus.
Matthew's Gospel seems to have Bethlehem as the home town of Mary and Joseph. The fled to Egypt to escape from King Herod the Great, returning after his death but turned aside to travel to Galilee and find a new home in Nazareth.
Nazareth is best known today for having the Church of the Annunciation, where, according to the Biblical Account, Mary was informed that she would have a virgin birth.
