In mammalian cells such as human cells, glucose and oxygen are the two starting materials required to perform aerobic respiration. However you also need a large number of enzymes to catalyse the various reactions that take place.

Aerobic respiration goes through the Krebs Cycle to breakdown glucose, because oxygen is present. ATP is produced and goes through electron chain transport.

Anaerobic respiration does not use oxygen, so this happens:

Cytosol converts glucose into pyruvic acid --> yield 2 ATP molecules --> get pyruvate ---> (fermentation process) 2 ATP used to make NAD+ (this is energy!) ---> NAD+ and NADH continually replenished.

Byproducts are lactic acid and alcohol, which builds up in system (be it muscle or anaerobe).

To answer your question, you probably need pyruvate....!

A gas is needed in the body to make energy?

Yes, Oxygen is needed by the body for aerobic cellular respiration. It is possible to use anaerobic respiration which is with out air, but it is must less efficient and produces lactic acid.

Water, optimum temperature, oxygen, certain ions and enzymes are needed for cellular respiration.

What is a very important substance needed to perform chemical reactions in cells?

ATP and oxygen. ATP provides the energy for cellular activity and oxygen drives the electrons for cellular respiration

What substances are nedded for cellular respiration to take place and what substances are during cellular respiration?

The substances that are needed for cellular respiration are glucose and oxygen. During cellular respiration, the cells convert food into usable energy.
