The greenhouse effect needs:

  • An atmosphere that contains greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide etc.
  • Heat from the sun (ultraviolet radiation) that warms the earth.
  • Heat from the warm earth (infrared radiation) that rises into the atmosphere and is captured by the greenhouse gases.

The greenhouse effect is a good thing. If we didn't have it the earth would be too cold for us to live on. The problem now is that we have added too much greenhouse gas, and the atmosphere is trapping too much heat causing global warming. This global warming causes climate change.
