What do German's celebrate?

Well for starters, they celebrate Easter as families get together and have a huge Easter feast. Afterwards, the kids find Easter eggs and they all go out for a walk. This is celebrated in March, the same as in the US. They call it Ostern. They also celebrate Oktoberfest, which is a festival in the fall where they celebrate and stuff because of a prince's wedding many, many years ago. They change dates, but it's usually a 6 week period In Sept-Nov. They also celebrate St. Nikolaus Day [St. Nicholas Day in English], which is to honor a bishop who died in 343 A.D. Saint Nikolaus offered a kind act to three women who couldn't afford dowries by placing three bundles of cash in their beds, which was enough to prevent them from going into prostitution and thus was able to get married. Saint Nikolaus Day is celebrated every December 6th. This is known as Nikolaustag. Then there's Christmas, or otherwise known as Weihnachten. It's official date is December 25th to 26th, but it starts on December 24th, during Holy Evening. During Holy Evening, families usually gather around for a Christmas dinner, then go to church services later on. "Santa Claus", or "Weihnachtsmann", also appears that night to bring good children Christmas presents. On December 25th and 26th, people visit friends and other relatives they haven't seen on December 24th.

How do people celebrate Christmas in other country?

In the United States children hang up stockings for Santa to fill on Christmas Eve. In the Netherlands, children work similarly with wooden shoes. In Italy children get their gifts from Santa under the tree on Christmas day, and eat Panettone. In Spain children celebrate Three Kings Day and receive their gifts in January. Christmas is celebrated with family. In Spain and throughout many countries in Latin America many people go to Midnight Mass on December 24th (called the Misa del Gallo). When they return from mass, the family opens its Christmas gifts. In Germany children celebrate December 6th, Nikolaustag , by placing their shoes in front of the door and (hopefully) finding sweets and fruit the next day inside them. The Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) is also a favorite among Germans to meet up with friends and enjoy a Glühwein. (hot red wine with spices) It's beautiful in Germany at Christmas time! French children put their shoes in front of the fireplace on Christmas eve, so that Santa Claus (Père Noël) can fill them with gifts. Candy, fruit, nuts, and small toys are also hung on the tree overnight. French families have le Réveillon, which is a huge feast. In each region they eat different food such as turkey, capon, goose, chicken… As a dessert they eat the traditional buche de Noël which is a log shaped chocolate and chestnuts cake. Christmas eve is called Reveillon throughout France, but in some areas New Year's Eve is also called Reveillon.
