Nitrogen fixation = fixing of atmosphere N2 to reactive form such as ammonia and nitrate . It can ether bt natural or synthetically.

1. Fixation bt living organism .

Exp . by Rhizobium , live in nodules of legume plant

2. Fixation by atmosphere

Exp , by lightning , huge energy involved cause N2 react with O2 form notrogen oxide and dissolve into soil

3. Fixation by haber process

to produce ammonia .

"Nitrogen fixation is a process by which nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere is converted into ammonia or other molecules available to living organisms. Atmospheric nitrogen or molecular dinitrogen is relatively inert: it does not easily react with other chemicals to form new compounds. The fixation process frees nitrogen atoms from their triply bonded diatomic form, N≡N, to be used in other ways."

Nitrogen fixation is the process by which nitrogen is taken from its relatively inert molecular form (N2) in the atmosphere and converted into nitrogen compounds (such as ammonia, nitrate and nitrogen dioxide). This is an essential process for life because fixed nitrogen is needed to make nucleotides which are needed to make DNA and also to make amino acids which in turn are needed to produce proteins. Nitrogen fixation is performed naturally by a number of different prokaryotes, including bacteria, actinobacteria, and certain types of anaerobic bacteria. Microorganisms that fix nitrogen are called diazotrophs. Some higher plants, and some animals (termites), have formed associations (symbiosises) with diazotrophs. Nitrogen fixation also occurs as a result of non-biological processes. These include lighting, industrially through the Haber-Bosch Process, and combustion.[2] Biological nitrogen fixation was discovered by the Dutch microbiologist Martinus Beijerinck.

What is atmospheric fixation?

Atmospheric Fixation:the enormous energy of lightning breaks nitrogen molecules and enables their atoms to combine with oxygen in the air forming nitrogen oxides. These dissolve in rain, forming nitrates, that are carried to the earth. Atmospheric nitrogen fixation probably contributes some 5– 8% of the total nitrogen fixed.
