No, never use the neutral conductor for anything but a neutral. If the house has no grounding system then there is no need to connect the fan ground wire to anything. Just keep in mind that the wiring in the house could be 70 plus years old and the insulation on this wire will be starting to break down if handled too much. Just cap the wire off and install the fan. Old two wire knob and tube systems were used in the 20's and they never used a ground with them. In the 40's NMD cable was used but it also never had a ground wire. It was in the early 60's that the third wire was added to NMD cable, it was a bare copper wire that was used for grounding equipment. Now the new wiring code states that there must be a grounding system in place for new installations.

How do you wire up a extractor fan for a bathroom so it can be turned on and off via light switch and the fan has no timer?
Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hertz supply service.First thing to do is turn off the breaker to that circuit. The fan has to be wired in parallel with the bathroom light. If you can access the light junction box from the back side (eg. in an attic space) install a two wire NMD #14 cable to the position of the new fan. Disconnect the bathroom fixture's black and white wires from the bathroom light. Connect the new NMD #14 wire to the wires you just removed the fixture from. Make a pigtail of 6 inches long from a piece of the black and white # 14 wire. Connect the white pigtail into the two white wires by twisting all three together and installing the proper size wire nut. Do the same with the black wires. Reconnect the bathroom fixture to the pigtail wires and reinstall the fixture to the junction box. Connect the new extractor fan to the free end of the NMD #14. Now when you turn on the light the new fan will also come on.
