As you should expect from it being referred to as "fuel" it is used as a source of energy. In nuclear reactors, the decaying U235 emits particles that, when controlled, can further split other atoms and in the process release more energy. The energy is absorbed as heat by a surrounding fluid and used to power steam turbines that generate electricity.

In some cases the heat given off by decaying radioactive isotopes is used directly to power devices through the thermoelectric effect where a difference in temperature can generate a voltage in a circuit. This effect is often used to power space probes.

Primarily, 238U, enriched to various levels of 235U, which is more fissile, but occasionally 239Pu.
