Any test of a nuclear explosive device intended for weaponization. These divide into four main classes:
- Developmental test shots, these are highly instrumented to verify the design and are usually just the bare device.
- Proof test shots, these often involve little or no instrumentation but are done in the complete weaponized form including casing and internal electronics. When atmospheric testing was allowed proof tests were often live fired (e.g. air dropped by plane, shot from artillery, or launched by a rocket to high altitude) to prove they worked in the complete weapon system they were designed for.
- Effects tests. Done to measure damage & injury under a variety of different conditions to calibrate weapons effects models. Usually done with already proven stockpiled weapons of known yield to reduce variables, but sometimes done in conjunction with Developmental or Proof tests already planned.
- Safety tests. Done to verify weapon is safe in storage and accidents and will not give nuclear yield until desired. Some types of safety tests are: one point detonator tests, fire tests, impact tests, component aging tests, etc.
