Sounds like you have an American made Browning. These were made by Remington under contract for Browning from 1940-49 If this is correct, the serial number is on the left side of the receiver. A5 is an abbreviation for Automatic-5 or "Auto5". A5 is the model. As far as the variation, there are lightweight versions in three guages and a magnum version in 12 & 20. You can identify by the serial number.

This should be an Auto5 12ga Magnum. We can tell this by the letter "V" in the serial number. However, there has to be a number before the V, which doesent show in your serial number. Are you sure the V is stamped the same way the 640970 is stamped? Could this be a 6V40970? In any case the number is incorrect. Please re-check and ask the question again. Thank you
