Petroleum is formed when algae and small sea creatures die. They get mixed up with the sand or silt on the sea floor. Sediment piles on top of them and they are compressed by a lot of pressure and heat.

Petroleum forms from the compressed stuff. Because it has low density the petroleum goes up through the ground and comes out of the rocks. It might form an oil field when it gets caught underneath dense rock.
