Transformers like other electrical equipment, produce heat. The heat has to be removed to keep the temperatures below maximum levels. There are various methods to do this. Using water is a efficient method; but cannot be done directly as water can be conductive. In the 'Oil immersed water cooled method', the entire transofmer is immersed in a tank filled with insulating mineral oil. Heat from the windings and core is transfered to the insulating oil and therefore heats up the oil. Water pipes run along the tank, in contact with the oil. Heat from the oil is now transfered to the water. This is a very efficient method of cooling especially when the voltages involved are high.
Oil filled self-cooled type uses small and medium-sized distribution transformers. The assembled windings and core of such transformers are mounted in a welded, oil-tight steel tanks provided with a steel cover. The tank is filled with purified, high quality insulating oil as soon as the core is put back at its proper place. The oil helps in transferring the heat from the core and the windings to the case from where it is radiated out to the surroundings. For smaller sized transformers the tanks are usually smooth surfaced, but for large size transformers a greater heat radiation area is needed, and that too without disturbing the cubical capacity of the tank. This is achieved by frequently corrugating the cases. Still larger sizes are provided with radiation or pipes.
To help disperse internal heat.
Transformer oil is a much better electrical insulator than air. So, in large transformers, oil is used to reduce the flashover distances between live internal parts, thus reducing the overall bulk of the transformer. At the same time, oil helps cool the transformer either by natural convection, or by forced circulation.'Dry transformers' are transformer that do not use oil for insulation or cooling purposes. They tend to be transformers with lower voltage and power ratings, where flashover and cooling is far less relevant.
To my knowledge no transformer is air conditioned. Some transformers have fans mounted on them, however, for uprating purposes. I don't believe this is an effective cooling mechanism for dry type transformers either (fans are usually used on oil filled transformers).
If the bed lamps use a low voltage bulb then the type of transformer will be a step down transformer.
Stepdown Transformer.
The device used to increase or decrease the voltage of an electric circuit is a step up transformer or a step down transformer respectively. A Variable Resistor
Electric company high voltage transformers used in the utility grid are typically insulated by being immersed in a tank of oil, and cooled by natural convection (circulation) of the oil. A "dry type" transformer is not immersed in oil, and is cooled by air convection or by fans.
