Unless you have an identical printer, there is seldom a reason to keep parts from an old printer of any kind. Printer parts are seldom interchangeable from one model to the next, and can be recycled where available.
If the computer is very old then it may expect the printer to be on a parallel port. Most modern printers do not have facility for a parallel connections anymore. It may not be possible to connect the printer to the old computer. Further if the computer is very old the printer manufacturer may not provide a print driver for the old operating system.
Quick and temporary: If the Printer box shows the name of your old printer, click to show all printers. Highlight the name of your new one. If that puts the new printer as the active one, go ahead and print. Permanent solution: Bring up System Preferences, select Print or Printer. When you have both the old and the new printer names on view and you see a plus and a minus sign below them, highlight the OLD printer and hit the minus sign. That should remove it from your computer.
You can probably find some ink cartridges on eBay and Amazon for your specific printer. If your printer is too old, it might be best to just get a new computer.
