This is easily proven. On a bright sunny day stand with your back to the sun, with a pressurized garden hose that has a nozzle attached capable of spraying a fine mist. Spray the mist forward and in a circular motion and you should be able to discern two rainbow rings clearly, seemingly suspended in mid air before you, one within the other. Look beyond to the center and you will see that the inner ring encircles the shadow of your head. The exact center is located specifically between your shadow's eyes. With larger rainbows, when the sun is lower in the sky, that shadow might disappear into the horizon point far off in the distance. Sometimes you might see a similar optical illusion rainbow as a halo surrounding a light source, particularly at night. However in this case, you will only see the light spectrum frequencies relative to the chemical composition of the burning gases emitted by that light. Incandescent light would have a red-orange-yellow halo. Mercury vapor halo's should be blueish and green. Flourescent lights have green spectrum halos. Halogen lights have spectrums similar to pure sunlight, so you should see halos with most of the colors of a natural rainbow.
