One interesting fact about tornadoes is that many of the worst ones have multiple vortices, almost like "mini tornadoes" inside of them. These subvortices or suction vortices as they are called, can have winds up to 100 mph (160 km/h) faster than the rest of the tornado. This is one of the main reasons a tornado can destroy one house, but leave the one next to it with only superficial damage. These suction vortices are usually hidden inside the funnel, but in rare instances are visible as separate funnels.
