The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was created by the United Nations Security Council through Resolution 1386, which was adopted on December 20, 2001. The force was established to assist the Afghan government in maintaining security following the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan to dismantle the Taliban regime. ISAF was initially led by Turkey and later by various NATO countries, with a significant role played by NATO in its operations.
