Ignoring the greater diversity of the early Gnostic Christians, some of the questions that have divided the Churches and continue to do so are:

  • The divinity of Jesus - whether he is equally divine with God;
  • Whether Jesus has one nature (Monophysite) or two natures (Dyophysite);
  • Trinitarianism - whether the Holy Trinity is three persons in one God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
  • The Nicene Creed and the filioque clause - whether the Holy Spirit emanates from the Father alone or also from the Son, Jesus;
  • Whether Mary is properly called Mother of God or Mother of Christ;
  • Use of icons or images of saints, which some Churches see as approaching idolatry;
  • Intercession of saints;
  • The date on which Easter should be celebrated;
  • Marriage of priests, almost always excluded in the Roman Catholic Church;
  • Leadership of the Church - for the modern Roman Catholic Church, the pope is the undisputed leader of the Church;
  • Whether religion can be accommodated to recent scientific knowledge - many of the traditional denominations say there is no conflict, while some more fundamentalist Churches reject any scientific knowledge that they see as not conforming with The Bible.

Some of these disputes seem petty and obscure, but to theologians and Church leaders they have been matters of intense dispute and division for centuries.

Why is the Christian Church described as apostolic?

Christian churches cannot be called apostolic as there is only one Church, the Catholic Church, that is truly apostolic. There are some churches that put the term apostolic in their name; however, this is a misnomer as they cannot exhibit a line of succession from the apostles to the present. If by the Christian Church you mean the Catholic Church then the answer is obvious, every Bishop, priest, and deacon has been ordained in the apostolic succession. The four marks of Christ's Church are that it is "One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic":' the Catholic meaning that it is universal, and the Apostolic meaning that all its leaders are ordain by men who were ordained by the Apostles. "Christian" Churches, as in protestant churches are only apostolic in their dreams.
