As of December 2, 2013, the most recent tornado to hit the USA was an EF2 that badly damaged several condominiums in North Carolina on November 26. Over 70 tornadoes ocurred on November 17. One of the worst of these tornadoes was an EF4 that leveled part of Washington, Illinois, killing three people and injuring more than 120.
Since 1950 one tornado, rated F2, appears to have hit Northfield on May 9, 2001.
In recent times, an EF5 tornado struck two elementary schools in Moore, Oklahoma on May 20, 2013. Seven students were killed at one of the schools.

This tornado was classified as an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale and caused damage to trees and buildings in the area. Tornadoes in Burlington are relatively rare, with this event being one of the notable instances in recent years.

On April 3, 1974 it was struck by an F5 tornado, followed by another F5 less than an hour later. Harvest was then struck by an F4 tornado in 1995, an EF5 tornado in 2011, and an EF3 tornado in 2012. The 2012 tornado destroyed homes being rebuilt following the one in 2011.

It hit nine towns and the only one I remember the name of was Gorham which was completely destroyed by the tornado.
The 2011 tornado was not the first to hit Joplin and it almost certainly will not be the last. Joplin probably will be hit by another tornado eventually, but there is no telling when. The chances of another one anywhere near as bad as the 2011 storm are remote, however.
