The Massachusetts 54th Regiment, organized in 1863, is an famous example of African-American soldiers fighting for the Union. The famous movie, 'Glory' depicts it from their point of view. They were given proper attire and uniforms, and fought several battles, the famous being Honey Hill. Their last battle was Battery Wagner, mainly about a Confederate fort which they were supposed to sneak attack on.
