Past tense is the tense of a verb that refers to actions in the past.

We use past simple to refer to things that were finished completed in the past. eg

I walked to school. - this is a finished action. There can be a time phrase like - last week

I walked to school last week.

We use past continuous to refer to actions that happened over a period of time in the past eg

I was listening to the radio. Can also have a time phrase like - last night

I was listening to the radio last night.

The past participle is the form of a verb that is used in perfect verb phrases eg

has walked / have walked / had walked, has eaten / have eaten / had eaten

the past participle is also used in passive verb phrases eg

is eaten / are eaten / was eaten / were eaten

Some verbs have the same past tense form and the same past participle form eg

walk / walked / walked, listen / listened / listened

Some verbs have another word for past and/or past participle eg

eat / ate / eaten, run / ran / run, give / gave / given

Some verbs have the same word for both eg

cut / cut /cut, let / let / let, hurt / hurt / hurt
