A loyalist was considered a person from the colonies that didn't want to break away from England. Their reasons for not wanting to varied, but for most of them it was #1 fear of the British government #2 the protection and benefits from England.
A patriot on the other hand, was a person that dissagreed with taxes on tea. You see, the British needed money after the revolutionary war to keep the army together. In order to get this money, they put taxes on things. The patriots didn't like it, so the British agreed to take taxes off everything except tea. The patriots wanted more! Eventually, it wasn't just taxes the patriots hated. They decided they didn't want to be at all a part of England. That was their belief.
Hope this helps.
