It does not happen automatically. Someone has to file for the probate to be opened.
Generally speaking, you cannot replace the DLLs of an older version with the ones in Windows XP. You may be able to use copies placed in a program's directory in Windows 2000. You probably cannot do this in 95 / 98 / ME / NT4 unless you make certain that an older version of the DLL has not been loaded into memory.

You can only save a file to the root directory of a system (in Unix) if you have permission to do so, and most users do not have this permission. Also, it is unnecessary (and a bad idea) to save files to the root directory; usually only other directories are placed here. Having said that, it depends on the program you are running, in terms of saving to the root directory.
