It was the tenth plague that God sent on Egypt when Pharaoh refused to let the Iraelites emigrate from the country.

The Angel of Death passed by every household in Egypt and slew the firstborn son. The eldest son of Pharaoh was killed, and so was the eldest son of the lowest prisoner in the Egyptian jailhouse.

However, there were a few households that the Angel of Death passed over. If the family had stained their door-lintel with the blood of a lamb, the firstborn son was spared.

The Children of Israel had all killed a lamb and smeared their door-lintels because Moses had warned them they needed to do this. So their firstborns were spared. A few Egyptians also listened to Moses, and they also saved their children by staining their door-posts with lamb's blood.
