It can be found in the lanthanoids section of a Periodic Table
It is very soft, and can be easily cut simply with a knife.
As it is in the lanthanoids group in the periodic table you can tell it's outer electron is on the f-electron shell.

They tend to all have fairly similar chemical and physical properties and can be tricky to separate. Neodymium and praeseodymium in particular are hard to separate (the -dymium part comes from Greek "didymos" meaning "twin").
These are two groups of what are called "inner transition elements" because the differentiating electron that is in one of the group but not in the one with the next lower atomic number goes into an f orbital, even though the atom already contains all of its valence electrons in its s and p orbitals
