It is a mood disorder that consists of drastic mood swings, that are at both sides of the pole. Either depression or mania. Rarely in between. Hence the name, BI POLAR. Manic depression is another reference to bi-polar disorder. ( BI=both POLAR=pole )
Lithium is one drug used to treat bi-polar syndrome formerally called manic depression

functional
The disorder known as bipolar was once known as manic depression. The disorder was changed to bipolar because the disorders were too similar to be known as two separate conditions.
That is probably a bi-polar situation, which used to be called manic-depressive syndrome.
Unfortunately, many individuals suffer from Bi-polar disorder (Types I and II). Manic and depressive states are combined into a volatile mental illness which features both. The sufferer may have depressive episodes followed by manic (or hyper-active) episodes. Only a licensed Psychologist or Psychiatrist can diagnose these disorders.
unlikely
Yes mania is characterized by intense mood changes, grandoisity, excess energy, and insomnia while depression is a comeplete lack of interest of things a person used to get pleasure from, a feeling of worthlessness, and a lack of energy or motivation.
Contrary to what many believe, manic depression is not "serious depression" or "real depression", although it is very serious and real. Mania is the opposite of depression. According to the dictionary, it is "an excessively intense enthusiasm, interest, or desire." A manic-depressive is someone who cycles between mania and depression. It is the same as Bipolar disorder. Manic depression is also known as Bipolar 1 or Bipolar 2. Its a complicated mental problem that is treated with medication. MANIC DEPRESSION is now called Bi Polar as in 2 poles of mood, lows and highs. I myself am asufferer and hate the WORD MANIC thankfully it now has a much kinder title. Indeed myself and others do have severe depressions. The highs differ and I have hypomania, mild highs. This is a severe illness many loose touch with reality. Depression is the opposite.
