Printer resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Printed images are made up of tiny dots of color, and how many dpi the printer can produce defines that printer's resolution. The higher the resolution, the smaller the dots, and the better the printed image. But different printers use different printing technologies, some of which result in better images than others. Some 300-dpi printers deliver better results than some 600-dpi printers.
Dot matrix printers may have 9, 24 or more pins, and can print in a rapid one-pass mode (I can't recall what the name is!) and a Near Letter Quality NLQ is which several passes of the print head places the dots closer together.
Common resolutions for color laser printers are one thousand two hundred DPI (dots per inch) and two thousand four hundred DPI. According to an article in The Verge, however, a group of Singaporean researches claim they have achieved "the highest possible DPI" at ten thousand dots per inch.

300 DPI is a very low resolutioe resolution rating. If this is the maximum resolution for the laser printer that you are looking at, do not buy it if you need sharp (or even acceptable quality) graphics. 300 DPI is the lowest common printing resolution, and dots are easily seen when looking at an image printed. Most laser printers, however have a 300 DPI setting, along with 600 and 1,200 DPI resolutions. The resolution of a laser printer does not matter if you plan on only printing black text, as resolution does not matter in this case.
