Pure Biology is simply the facts about the living world. In research terms, it is basic research, describing migrations of birds, or studying molecules for their function. Applied biology includes fields such as agriculture and conservation. It is taking the pure biology and applying to a problem or field. For example, in pure biology we may find that multiple chromosomes increases the health of a certain species of wheat. Applied biology could use that information to improve the crops that we eat.

∙ 9y agoPure science is science done in a laboratory. It is also called natural science. Applied science is also called technology or engineering. It is done outside. In pure science, a biologist might discover a drug that kills a bacteria. In applied science, a physician might find out if that drug cures a patient. In pure science a physicist might discover a new way to make a diode. In applied science an engineer will see if it works in a television set.

How does pure science lead to applied science?
Pure science is research for its own sake; the idea is to expand our general body of knowledge. Applied science is research with a specific goal in mind, such as a new drug or more efficient vehicle. Pure science can lead to applied science by making a discovery which has an immediate or obvious practical application. One famous example would be nylon stockings, which grew out of polymer experiments in the then-new science of plastics.
