GMO or genetically modified organisms are made by changing genetic sequence of an organism. Usually, it means adding genes that an organism doesn't have naturally, which helps, for example, their immune system, makes them more resistant to bad conditions etc. So, I think it is ok to say that additional genes are put inside gmo food.
