A: ZENERS are nothing else then regular diode that have a very predictable reverse breakdown voltage of xx volts. This voltage can be used to limit the input voltage or regulate on it.

Hi,

A rated breakdown voltage is the voltage that exceeds the designed voltage for a device. If for instance, a device has a rated breakdown voltage of 100 volts DC and you apply 200 volts, the odds are excellent that it will go into catastrophic failure, by either shorting out or creating an open circuit. Neither is desirable.

Hope this helps,

Cubby

when applied voltage is large ,the current flowing through insulation increases very sharply and electrical breakdown occurs

A strongly conuducting spark formed during breakdown .

This max.applied voltage called Breakdown volltage .

Explian action of zener diode as a regulator?

Zener predicatively will break down at a voltage as manufactured and sustain that voltage as long as the source can provide the current. The limitation is the zener power dissipation for each device. It Regulates by maintaining that breakdown voltage until its current is reduced or its break down voltage is reduced.

Peak reverse voltage of a diode is the maximum reverse bias voltage can be applied to diode which does not cause break down.

Break down voltage?

The breakdown voltage of an insulator is the minimum voltage that makes it partially conductive electrically. On the other hand, the breakdown voltage in a diode refers to the minimum reverse voltage to cause it to conduct in reverse.

Can i use 12v -0-12v to 230v step up transformer to get more voltages let say 2000v?

If you exceed the rated voltage of your transformer, there is a high possibility that its insulation will break down and you will ruin that transformer.
