Joseph Pilates developed exercises for injured WW1 vets by hooking up springs to the hospital beds. He later developed these into his own version of exercise equipment called the reformer, cadillac, combo chair and ladder barrel. He also developed mat exercises similar to the equipment exercises. He called his exercise system, "contrology" but after his death in 1967, the exercises were simply called, "Pilates". They are very popular now for physical rehabilitation, dancers and other performers and as general exercise that emphasizes flexibility, coordination as well as strength.
