Beta is usually used in terms for Beta testing before the full release candidate, it could go from Beta to RC before a full release is made. so basically beta = After an initial round of in-house testing, software publishers often release new programs to be tested by the public. These pre-release versions are called beta software

A software beta test is a test release of the software. Normally beta testers then take the software and test it out and report any bugs in the software. A few more tests down the road is called a Release Candidate then after those there is the final version.

The form that comes after beta is called RC, or release candidate, meaning that the beta has reached a form where it may be releasable. After debugging the RC version is deemed 'code complete', meaning the source code is ready for release and will not be edited any more.
