He asked them to stand as their father was passing below them.It was out of respect for he fought as hard he could to find Bob Ewell guilty, which was hard, but he still technically found him guilty because everyone knew he did it,but Tom Robinson is African-American,so at the time, they didn't believe what Tom said to be true and factual.Bob made Mayella lie because he knew that he would go to jail, and he would rather let an innocent man be tried and punished then confessing to his own fault and wrongs.
In Chapter 21 of "To Kill a Mockingbird," Reverend Sykes tells Scout to stand up with the rest of the courtroom as a sign of respect for her father, Atticus Finch, who is leaving the courtroom after the trial. This act symbolizes the respect and admiration the community has for Atticus as a lawyer and as a man of integrity.
"Standup. Your Father is passing by."
Reverend Sykes is a character in Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." He is the pastor of the African-American church in Maycomb and plays a supportive role in Scout and Jem's lives. He is portrayed as a kind and principled man who offers guidance and wisdom to the children.
In chapter 12 of "To Kill a Mockingbird," segregation is evident through the division between the white and black communities in Maycomb. We see this when Calpurnia brings Jem and Scout to her black church and they are met with surprise and discomfort from the congregation. The separation of the two races is also highlighted when Calpurnia speaks differently at the church and when she returns to the Finch household.
