Frederick Froebel (also spelled Frobel by some sources) was a leader in developing what came to be called "Kindergarten." (He advocated for little children to attend school at a younger age than had been accepted before.) Froebel believed in adapting education to suit the needs of young children, who learn differently from older children. He also believed little children could develop their intelligence through using educational games and guided play. In Froebel's viewpoint, children were inherently capable of creative thought, so if adults (including teachers) provided them with interesting opportunities, the children would be able to learn.

Children in Froebel's kindergartens participated in enjoyable but challenging educational activities, where they used such objects as colored blocks and balls; items with geometric patterns; crayons, clay, paper and scissors; etc. Thus, the child learned about colors, shapes, sizes, and the relationships of objects to each other (similarity versus difference, for example). The role of the learner, even as a child, was to explore, to observe, and to learn by doing.
