The Earth's atmosphere is about 120 miles thick and anything we see from the surface of the Earth is distorted by the water vapor and debris that is in the air. If you are in space you do not have this distortion. The Hubble Telescope is a good example of space based telescopes.Scientists have put telescopes in space to avoid interference by the atmosphere.SOURCE:-Page 560 of Holt Science & Technology Earth Science-Chapter 18-Studying Space-Section 2- Telescopes-Optical Telescopes in Space
Studying universe in IR (infrared) wavelength is called infrared astronomy. Because of lot's of parameters such as redshift (for far objects like early galaxies) it is very interesting for modern astronomy and most of future studying in this field will be on these wavelengths. Next generation of space telescopes (like WEBB) will observe in IR too.

how can studying earthquake damaged help designers improve future construction is by understanding what would you need and to build this or that building to prevented damaged building

When studying Earth Science or Mountains it is important to know the different types of mountain building. These are volcanic, fold, block and dome.
No. It depends on the context. If you are studying solar gain in a building then the room temperature is a dependent variable. If you are studying the effects of diseases, the body temp is a dependent variable.
Typically, astronomers use various types of telescopes. These days, everything is being controlled by computers, so you'd need to include "computers" in any list of tools.
Generally telescopes. These can vary from small affairs you set up in the garden to study the sky, to those actually in the sky as with the Hubble Space Telescope. There are also many dotted around in observatories.

The advantages of studying population changes is mainly in the planning area. If an area knows the population is increasing they make take steps to accommodate more people. This would include things like building new schools or building new roads. If the data found from the study shows the population decreasing measures may be taken such as putting off building a new school.
