Rudolph was created in 1939 as part of a Montgomery Ward (a now-defunct chain of department stores) ad campaign.
Rudolph was originally created for the Montgomery Ward group in department stores. In 1939, Robert L. May, a copywriter for Montgomery Ward was asked to develop a Christmas story for a promotional gimmick. Looking for an alliterative name, May considered and rejected Rollo (which he concluded was too cheerful for the story of a misfit) and Reginald (which was "too British") before deciding on Rudolph. Montgomery Ward distributed 2.5 million copies of the Rudolph booklet in 1939.
