Why do some people think life is not sacred?

The concept of the sacredness of life is mostly, although not exclusively, a theological one. In theological sacredness it is connected to the belief that life in general is created by a deity, which obtains a special significance of purpose to it. In some religions this special significance is applied to humans above all other animals as a special creation, and often unlike other animals, humans are said to be endowed with an immortal soul. However there are many people who are humanists or atheists (or otherwise) who believe that humans are not created by a deity, and therefore not special. But instead that all life formed by natural processes, and humanity is no different in that regard. They believe that life is made up of physical matter, including the brain which generates the mind, as it does in all animals that have a brain organ, including humans. So a "soul" would be superfluous, which is why they don't believe such a thing exists. In their point of view all life ceases at the point of death, and there is no reason to believe there is an afterlife. So while they may still regard life with reverence, which is a different kind of sacred, they don't believe in theological sacredness.
