Sediment accumulation is where sediment accumulates generally in the point of the lowest elevation. If sediment is in a river generally the sediment will accumulate at the mouth of the delta when entering the marine environment (proximal to distal).

Sediment is fine particles carried in a liquid... such as sand in a river. It gets carried along when the river is flowing swiftly, but if the water slwos down enough, such as in a lake, or at a dam, the sediment stops moving as swiftly as it had been and settles to the bottom of the waterway. This eventually builds up as time passes and more and more sediment is deposited. In the case of dams they can stop functioning properly, and in the case of lakes they can spread out over a larger area.

Particles of earth and other debris suspended in water (in a river for example) succumb to gravity as the speed of the water slows. This allows the particles to settle on the river bed - and build up a layer of sediment.
