Literature in the eighteenth century is known for its remarkable variety in tone and genre. There was lots of satire, open religiosity, and seduction. Plays contained lots of sexual innuendo and reflected Charles II's love of women, food, and money. An example of a famous play from the eighteenth century is Wycherley's "The Country Wife". In the eighteenth century was the birth of the novel, with well known artists including Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Samuel Richardson, and Jonathan Swift. During the century, the first dictionary with normalized spelling was written by Samuel Johnson and John Dryden became the first literary and artistic critic.
