There isn't another bridge anywhere else in the world that looks anything like Tower Bridge so it is instantly recognisable. It is the only bridge over the River Thames that can be raised to allow tall-masted boats to pass under it. It is still possible for pedestrians to cross the bridge, even when it is 'open' to allow a boat to pass underneath.

The tower bridge is a famous and iconic symbol of London, England. The extraordinary thing about the tower bridge is the way that it can open to allow taller boats to pass under it. Absolutely nothing. It is a very ordinary bridge built in 1973. However, Tower Bridge is much more interesting and foreigners very often wrongly think that it is London Bridge.

There are two possible answers. The bridge is immediately adjacent to the Tower of London so may have been named after it. Alternatively, there is a tower at both ends of the bridge to support the suspension cables so could have been called 'Tower' because of that.

How does the London bridge know to open when a boat comes through?

London Bridge isn't an opening bridge. The only bridge in London which spans the river Thames and can open, is Tower Bridge. If a boat needs to have the bridge opened so that it can pass underneath, it has to book a slot in advance with the bridgemaster who will arrange to open the bridge at the agreed time.

Why does the Tower Bridge open if the bridges around it don't?

Tower Bridge was completed in 1894 and was designed to open so that taller ships could get into the Pool of London which was a busy area of the river Thames at that time. When the bridge was built, there were no other bridges between it and the open sea.

Did briton give american a london bridge?

The London Bridge which was built in 1820, was no longer capable of dealing with modern traffic levels by the 1960's, so was dismantled and sold to an entrepreneur in 1973 who re-assembled it in Lake Havasu City Arizona as a tourist attraction. It is rumoured that the buyer thought that he was buying the nearby Tower Bridge but both the purchaser and vendors have denied this. However, it is a fact that many Americans think that the iconic Tower Bridge is called London Bridge.
