I have personally had more like with rotting meat and worms than anything. I suppose it depends more upon the type of fish native to the lake you would be fishing in. If you're some place where gators are common i dont recommend using rotting meat.... You might catch more than you bargained for if you did
A good bait for lake fishing are maggots, when easily available. A good and cheap bait, which is always handy, is stale bread. If you don't use it all and not getting any bites you can always feed the birds on the stroll back to your car.
