Your first (and second - and maybe even third) draft is where you simply get the story down on paper. Some writers refer to this as "verbal diarrhea" because you're just pouring the words out to get the basic plot down. You do a lot of brainstorming and plotting, but then you have to go back and edit before you can sell the book.
