For Jewish people Pentecost(more commonly known as Shavuot) celebrates God Giving the Jewish people the Torah.

For Christian people it is when God Gave them the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.

For both peoples, it signifies the birthdays of their religions.

The pentacost is special because this is when Jesus's diciples were blessed with the Holy Spirit. And after that they had no fear to spread the gospel.

It's generally considered the birthday of the church - the day when, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the disciples began actively preaching the Gospel.

First, Pentecost (aka Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks) is one of the 3 annual pilgrimage festivals of the Jewish year. Observance of Shavuot is included in the festival calendars in the Torah. Every adult Jew was expected to travel to Jerusalem on each of these festivals. The story of Pentecost in Acts occurs as the disciples are taking part in this pilgrimage, so they were already celebrating it before the events remembered in Acts. All of the pilgrimage festivals of the Jewish calendar are feast days, and it's pretty clear that, to the extent that Christians remember Pentecost, it is remembered as an occasion appropriate for a good meal.
