Electrical resistivity is a measure of how a material opposes the flow of electric current. Copper is used for electrical lines because it has a low resistance relative to its cost. Gold and silver also have a low resistance, but imagine how expensive the power cord for your computer would be if it were made of gold!

In fact, there is no such expression as 'specific resistivity'; you are probably thinking of the term 'specific resistance', which is an obsolete term for 'resistivity', which is a physical property of a material.

As the original answer explains, resistivity is defined as 'the resistance of a unit length of a material of uniform cross section'.

In SI, this definition equates to 'the resistance of between opposite sides of a one-metre cube of a material'. Note that a 'metre cube' is not the same thing as 'cubic metre'! It literally means a cube, with one-metre sides!

The SI unit for resisitivity is the ohm metre; in North America, the unit is the ohm circular mill per foot.

Resistivity provides us with a means of comparing the resistances of different materials while eliminating the physical dimensions involved.
