Blackrock Spire is an old-world (previous raid) instance located inside Blackrock Mountain. Blackrock Mountain can be accessed from Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes (there's an entrance on either side of the mountain).
The instance is split into two, connected parts.
The first, Lower Blackrock Spire, has a section with Humanoids (Trolls, Orcs and Ogres mostly), the matron of the Worgs, Halycon, and a spider boss. The final boss in this instance is Overlord Wyrmthalak.
The second part is Upper Blackrock Spire, where you will face Rend Blackhand (the false Warchief) and the master of the forces under Nefarion, General Drakkisath.
A quest in the area, dropped by the Quartermaster just outside the instance, asks of you to kill General Drakkisath and obtain his mark. This will attune you to Blackwing Lair, so that you can enter there without first having to go through UBRS.
