Wikipeida search result: A spit is a deposition landform found off coasts. Like a peninsula, one end is connected to the coast while the other end jutts out into the water. It is a type of beach that is made where a re-entrant occurs by the process of longshore drift, which occurs when waves meet the beach at an oblique angle, and backwashes perpendicular to the shore, moving sediment down the beach in a zigzag pattern. This is complemented by longshore currents, which transport sediment through the water alongside the beach. These currents are set in motion by the same oblique angle of entering waves that cause the drift and transport sediment in a similar process.
