Spyware is a type of malware (malicious software)program that is designed to monitor an infected machine. Some spyware programs are used by companies and businesses to monitor what ads the infected machine looks at so it can redesign its marketing efforts. However, most spyware programs are used by malicious hackers (crackers) to monitor an infected computer in order to steal confidential information like usernames and passwords to bank accounts.
Adware does not classify as malware, but it can be very annoying. The word "adware" is a combination of "advertising" and "software". As you can already tell, all adware does is pop up ads at random times in order to convince the user to buy some product. Some antivirus companies nowadays come with adware protection to detect and remove adware.
