Steven Spielberg's favourite movie is Lawrence of Arabia. He was "stunned" when he saw it for the first time as a teenager in Arizona, and on the Lawrence of Arabia DVD he describes it as "a miracle of a movie." Spielberg and close friend Martin Scorsese paid for the film to be restored and presented it to David Lean, the film's director.

Other films that Steven Spielberg has described as favourites are The Searchers, The Shining, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Godfather, Citizen Kane, It's A Wonderful Life, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Psycho and The War of the Worlds.

Spielberg frequently speaks fondly of The Greatest Show on Earth. This was the first movie he saw as a child and its infamous and technically stunning train crash sequence is briefly featured in his remake of The War of the Worlds.
