He was "stunned" when he saw it for the first time as a teenager in Arizona, and on the Lawrence of Arabia DVD he describes it as "a miracle of a movie." Spielberg and close friend Martin Scorsese paid for the film to be restored and presented it to David Lean, the film's director.
