I don't know if you find it strange that the servant sent to deliver the invitations was in fact illiterate and so could not read the guest list. You'd think that Capulet would make sure the servant could read before giving him the job, or that the servant would demand this information from Capulet before leaving the house. But no, he goes up to the first random person he sees who looks like he might possibly be literate. Who just happens to be Romeo.
In Act I Scene 5 Tybalt tells Capulet that Romeo, a Montague, has crashed the party. Capulet tells Tybalt not to bother about it: Romeo has a good reputation, and is behaving himself, so why disturb the party at which everyone is having a great time?
Benvolio tells Romeo that Juliet is a Capulet at the party.
He finds out about it though Mercutio and Benvolio who found out about it when Capulet sent Peter out to give the invitations and since he's illiterate he asks Mercutio and Benvolio to read who he has to give the invitations too.

Lord Capulet let romeo stay at the party because he did not want an uprising to make him look bad at his own party. Trust me I read Romeo and Juliet 3 and a half weeks ago.

Tybalt was upset at the party because Romeo arrived at the Capulet party. Tybalt believes that Romeo is mocking him and the Capulet name by arriving at the party. He attempts to fetch his rapier but his uncle, Lord Capulet stops Tybalt.
Capulet allows Romeo to stay at the party because Tybalt does not recognize him as a Montague. In addition, Capulet does not want to create a scene at the party by causing a confrontation with a guest, so he chooses to let Romeo stay and enjoy the festivities.

If I remember correctly it is the Capulet party, and is the only party in the whole play. Of course, by me saying that, the reason Romeo thinks it's a bad idea is because it is the Capulet's house.
