Sashimi is a bit separate from sushi, but since they're generally eaten together, they are referred to in the same context. Sashimi is simply slices of raw fish. Oftentimes, they are placed on top of a lump of rice. Usually, they are eaten alone with only soy sauce.

Sashimi has been eaten by mankind since they first caught a fish and ate it without cooking. That would be pretty much anyplace man was.
